Nodir Divan-Begi Madrasah

Nodir Divan-Begi Madrasah is a part of the architecture ensemble of the 16-17th century Lyabi Hauz. It was constructed in line with the order of Nadir Divan-Begi. He served as vazir (minister) during rule of Imamkuli-han.

It was stable and peaceful time and rulers of Bukhara paid great attention to city construction.

Preliminary Nodir Divan-Begi was planning to construct caravan-serai to receive good profit as the trade was growing near Lyabi Hauz square. At the same time, there was main trade street of Bukhara with trade domes near it. So, it was expected that caravan-serai rooms will be highly demanded. But at the solemn opening ceremony, Imamkuli-han unexpectedly announced it as spiritual-educational institution. In the result, the vizir re-constructed the building to the needs of believers. But later, he became famous as the patron and defender of faith.

Architecture and location

Spiritual-educational institution has traditional decoration for Central Asia. Nodir Divan-Begi Madrasah was constructed like Sherdor Madrasah in Samarkand.

However, instead of the famous lions on its portal, doe and two mythical bird of happiness – Simurg were decorated with the mosaics. And the sun shines at the very top in the center.

Nodir Divan-Begi Madrasah is located in the front of khanaqa also named after Nodir Divan-Begi. It was constructed for relaxation of sufies. So, both buildings formed architectural method qosh.

The fact that initially it was not madrasah is visible to the naked eye. Absence of classrooms indicated this. . In addition, the narrow entrance to the madrasah leads directly to the patio, around which there are only living rooms - khujdras.

In 1993, Nodir Divan-Begi Madrasah was included to the UNESCO Heritage List.
